Saying "nah", with Care and Confidence

  • Learning how to say "no" is super important and somewhat of an art form.

  • For a few years, I found myself doing things and going to events/parties that I had no interest in, but felt like I better do these things so that I'll receive the same in return. Or, they'd do this and be here for me...come to find out, they weren't - bummer.

  • First off, it's wrong to even think that way- doing something for the reciprocation! We should be acting out of our own love and care to simply be good people, with no expectations in return.

  • Speaking of our own love and care, this is when we can positively say no to something without feeling bad. And it doesn't have to be a brunt "no!" I find by taking the time to think about why I need to decline and how this may affect the other person, allows for a thoughtful delivery that leaves you both feeling ok in the end.

  • In a professional setting, I find by backing my case so to speak, along with asking questions to confirm the requester's expectations, allows for a more confident, respectful and strategic delivery of a declination.

  • In my personal life, knowing myself well enough that I don't want to "waste time doing shit I hate", while also being caring enough to think of how my decision to say "nah" may affect the other person is my way of maneuvering around the situation without hurting feelings or building resentment!

  • Saying no is still something I'm working on, because I always seem to over worry about the other person's feelings, regardless of it's a personal or professional situation.

  • Having confidence, and a taking time to thoughtfully decline will save you from resentment and keep you in a healthy, happy place in your life!
